Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. Applied topically, it can help with uneven tone, redness, dullness and discoloration. It can be deployed to treat melasma as well.

When topically applied, TXA works by interrupting at two pathways which, if left unchecked, can lead to discoloration.

According to Dr. Corey Hartman, a board certified dermatologist, it can take a while for TXA work— as much as 8-12 weeks—but with consistent use, consumers/patients will see results.

Fellow dermatoloigist Dr Tina Alster is fan as well.

“Tranexamic acid is a powerhouse skin lightening ingredient that is as effective as hydroquinone but has a much better safety profile. It evens out skin tone with little to no irritation or peeling and plays well with other active ingredients such as Vitamin C and retinol,” she said.
