Research efforts in the development of innovative strategies for upgrading bioglycerol are being honored with the 2024 Glycerine Innovation Award.
This year’s recipient is Dr. Mohamed El Doukkali, associate professor of chemistry, University of Sultan Moulay Slimane (Morocco).
The yearly honor is sponsored by the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) and Clean Fuels Alliance America (Clean Fuels).
The ACI and Clean Fuels Glycerine Innovation Award recognizes outstanding achievement for research into new applications for glycerine, with particular emphasis on commercial viability.
The Glycerine Innovation Award includes a certificate and a $5,000 honorarium.
“My current research focuses on the development of catalytic processes for the synthesis of value-added chemicals and fuels from renewable resources,” said Dr. Mohamed El Doukkali. “The challenge was to design chemical processes involving solid materials - so-called catalysts - capable of selectively directing the conversion of bioglycerol - without pre-purification of the water - towards value-added chemical products such as biohydrogen, diols, and propylene.”
He continued, “We also considered crucial aspects like minimizing costs, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. This recognition from AOCS will help me to continue overcoming new research challenges in the field.”
The authors were recognized during the 2024 American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) Annual Meeting.
The Distinguished Paper Award is an annual honor presented by ACI.
The authors of the research include Dan Lundberg, AstraZeneca R&D, Maria Stjerndahl, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Krister Holmberg, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
