What’s In My Jar, a London-based start-up focusing on personalized skin care advice, has launched a free Sunscreen Finder tool, billed as a chat-based automated assistant that provides sunscreen recommendations based on a person’s skin type, lifestyle and budget.
The start-up contends there are more than 650 sunscreens in its database, and the tool evaluates the sunscreens formulas for the ability to provide stable, broad spectrum sun protection and assesses the risk of skin and eye irritation.
Additionally it reportedly checks the potential of sunscreens leaving a white cast and takes into account where a consumer will be buying their sunscreen as many of the UV filters used in Europe and Asia are not available in the US.
“The idea for the Sunscreen Finder came after a conversation with a friend of mine who told me that he does not use a sunscreen because the products he tried sting his skin and eyes. He just assumed sunscreens were not for him, and he just needs to accept occasional sunburns. This was terrifying to me, because having just five or more sunburns doubles one’s risk of melanoma skin cancer! In reality, there were a few sunscreen ingredients that were too harsh for my friend’s sensitive skin, and we could easily find a product that he could use without any problems. I had a similar conversation with another friend of mine who believed that sunscreens were not made for her because of the white cast many of the products leave on her dark skin. Selecting a sunscreen that is right for you is a surprisingly difficult task for most consumers. You need to know a lot about the UV filters, product formulations and labeling conventions to make sense of the ingredient labels. We wanted to make this task easy with our Sunscreen Finder,” said Maria Semykoz, co-founder and CEO of What’s In My Jar.
